Kai Klostermann: From Functioning to Being

"I am interested in the human being at the moment when he stops functioning and begins to simply be."

In an age characterized by digital arbitrariness and the constant pressure for self-optimization, I see my photography as a counterpoint to substance. My work is an ongoing exploration of self-determination within limitations – a search for inner strength that only becomes visible through resistance.

The path to the core: Africa and the unfiltered reality

My artistic foundation lies not in academic theory, but in the direct interaction with the world. During my years in technical customer service in Africa, I experienced a "life without buffers." Far removed from romantic clichés, the harsh, technical necessity there taught me what true freedom means: It is not a luxury, but the ability to remain true to oneself in every situation—no matter how restrictive the limitations.

This unheroic, direct experience of reality shapes my perspective in the studio today. In Africa I found freedom, in my hometown of Hamburg, stability.

The “Space without Reason”

In my Hamburg studio, the "space without reason", I translate these experiences into visual resistances.

I deliberately use elements like water and color to create a controlled sense of confinement. This limitation is not intended to restrict, but rather to liberate: it forces the person to abandon their usual pose and outward appearance.

It is an invitation to lose control of the facade in order to regain control of one's own being.

The Aesthetics of Resistance

My images seek the moment of transcendence – when humanity no longer merely suffers limitations, but asserts itself sovereignly within them. In an era of AI-generated arbitrariness, I rely on physical presence and human craftsmanship, which in 2026 will be sought more than ever as a sanctuary for identity.

True abundance does not come from more options, but from returning to one's own core.
